Chemical Treatments Guide

Keratin, Smoothening, Rebonding, Hair Botox and Global Colour all change your hair at a structural level. Great results depend on choosing the right treatment and caring for it well in the first 72 hours.

Which treatment is right for you

  • Keratin — coats and seals the cuticle to cut frizz

    • Finish: smooth and soft, with natural movement; keeps some wave

    • Lasts: 3–5 months, fading gradually

    • Time in salon: 2–3 hours

  • Hair Botox — deep-conditions and fills damaged areas, with little or no straightening

    • Finish: shiny, fuller, less frizz

    • Lasts: 2–4 months

    • Time in salon: 1.5–2.5 hours

  • Smoothening — relaxes the hair's bonds for a softer straight

    • Finish: straight with natural bounce

    • Lasts: treated hair stays smooth; new growth needs a touch-up in 4–6 months

    • Time in salon: 3–5 hours

  • Rebonding — fully restructures the bonds for maximum straightness

    • Finish: sleek, poker-straight

    • Lasts: treated hair stays straight; new growth needs a touch-up in 6–8 months

    • Time in salon: 4–6 hours

  • Global Colour — permanent colour on all hair, root to tip

    • Finish: even, rich tone with full grey coverage

    • Lasts: roots show in 4–6 weeks; tone softens with washing

    • Time in salon: 1.5–3 hours

Times vary with hair length and density. Your stylist confirms after a strand check.

Is it safe for you?

We will advise against, delay or adapt a chemical service if you have:

  • Allergy risk to hair dye. A skin patch test 48 hours before colour is required for first-time clients and anyone who has reacted before.

  • Henna or home colour on your hair. Henna can react unpredictably with chemicals. We strand-test first and may advise waiting.

  • Bleached, very damaged or recently treated hair. We test a strand and may suggest a repair course before straightening.

  • Scalp wounds, burns, or active psoriasis or eczema. We wait until the scalp has healed.

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding. Please check with your doctor. We recommend avoiding straightening during this time.

About formaldehyde: some keratin products release formaldehyde fumes when heated. Ask your stylist which formula is used. EES favours low-fume and formaldehyde-free systems and works with ventilation on.

Before your appointment

  1. Book a strand check and, for colour, a patch test at least 48 hours ahead.

  2. Wash your hair the day before with regular shampoo. Skip conditioner, oil and serum on the day.

  3. Arrive with dry hair, free of styling products.

  4. Allow the full time slot.

  5. Want colour and straightening? Plan colour first. Your stylist will advise whether both can be done the same day or 1–2 weeks apart.

What happens in the chair

  1. Consultation and hair analysis — texture, porosity, past treatments and the result you want

  2. Cleansing — a clarifying wash so the treatment absorbs evenly

  3. Application — section by section, kept off the scalp where required

  4. Processing — timed for your hair type; rebonding and smoothening include a neutralising step that locks in the new shape

  5. Sealing — blow-dry and flat-iron at a controlled temperature

  6. Finish and home-care briefing — your first-72-hour rules and aftercare

The first 72 hours

Your stylist will confirm the exact wait for your formula. As a rule:

  • Do not wash for 48–72 hours (keratin, smoothening, rebonding)

  • Do not tie, clip, pin or tuck hair behind your ears; no caps or tight helmets

  • Keep it dry — avoid rain, heavy workouts and steam; carry an umbrella

  • Sleep on your back with hair spread straight, ideally on a silk or satin pillowcase

  • Colour: wait 48–72 hours before the first wash so the colour fully sets

Long-term care

  • Use a sulphate-free shampoo and mask — we recommend L'Oréal Professionnel Liss Unlimited for smoothed hair and Inforcer for breakage-prone hair, both available in-studio

  • Wash in lukewarm or cool water, 2–3 times a week

  • Use a heat protectant before every blow-dry or iron

  • Wear a swim cap and rinse straight after chlorine or sea water

  • Book a hair spa every 3–4 weeks

  • Trim split ends every 8–10 weeks

Maintenance schedule

  • Keratin: repeat in 3–5 months

  • Hair Botox: repeat in 2–4 months

  • Smoothening: root touch-up in 4–6 months

  • Rebonding: root touch-up in 6–8 months

  • Global Colour: root touch-up in 4–6 weeks; gloss every 8–10 weeks

  • Big event coming up? Book straightening 7–14 days before and colour 2–3 weeks before

Never straighten the same length twice. Touch-ups treat new growth only.
